It is fully managed, so Google handles OS patching, maintenance, HA failover (with regional HA), and much of capacity management. This fits the 2-week timeline and the limited SRE availability for only minor tasks.
Marketplace MySQL on Compute Engine is self-managed. While it preserves the MySQL schema, it requires the team to handle OS patching, database upgrades, backup automation, PITR setup, replication management, HA/failover design, and capacity planning. This directly conflicts with the requirement that the single SRE cannot manage these responsibilities and increases risk for production readiness within 2 weeks.
Bigtable is a wide-column NoSQL database optimized for massive scale and low-latency key/value access patterns, not relational schemas, joins, or MySQL compatibility. Migrating a relational MySQL schema to Bigtable requires significant data model redesign and application changes, and it does not natively provide MySQL-style relational constraints. It also doesn’t directly address PITR and replica needs in the same way for MySQL workloads.
Cloud Spanner is a globally scalable relational database, but it is not MySQL and typically requires schema and application changes (SQL dialect differences, primary key design, interleaving considerations). While Spanner provides strong consistency and high availability, the requirement explicitly states continuing with the existing MySQL relational schema and being production-ready in 2 weeks with minimal ops. Spanner is overkill and risky for this migration constraint.
Firestore is a document NoSQL database designed for hierarchical documents and real-time sync patterns, not for existing MySQL relational schemas with joins and relational constraints. Migrating would require substantial redesign and changes to query patterns and transactions. It also doesn’t map cleanly to the stated need for MySQL schema continuity and rapid, low-ops production readiness.
