Practice Questions 1

You are hardening network access for a production Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance used exclusively by a batch processing service that runs on a single Compute Engine VM (n2-standard-4) in the same project and region; both the VM and the Cloud SQL instance are attached to the same custom VPC (10.20.0.0/16) and currently have both public and private IPs assigned. The VM resides in subnet 10.20.3.0/24 and does not need to accept inbound connections from the public internet; your security policy mandates minimizing public exposure while maintaining connectivity between the VM and the database within the VPC. To improve network security without breaking connectivity, what should you do?

Incorrect. Removing the Cloud SQL private IP would force the VM to use the database’s public IP for connectivity, which increases exposure and contradicts the requirement to keep communication inside the VPC when possible. Since both resources are already attached to the same custom VPC, private IP is the more secure and simpler design. Public-IP access would also require additional controls such as authorized networks or connectors, adding unnecessary complexity. This option moves the architecture in the opposite direction of the hardening goal.
Incorrect. A Cloud SQL instance needs at least one reachable network path for clients, either public IP or private IP, so disabling both would make the database inaccessible to the VM. Private Google Access does not provide direct connectivity to a Cloud SQL instance with no usable IP endpoint; it is primarily for accessing Google APIs and services from VMs without external IPs. It is a common misconception to treat Private Google Access as a substitute for Cloud SQL private IP networking. Choosing this option would break the batch service rather than secure it.
Incorrect. Authorized Networks is used for Cloud SQL public IP access and is based on public source IP ranges, not an internal subnet like 10.20.3.0/24. That means the proposed allowlist is not the right mechanism for a VM reaching the instance over its internal VPC address space. Even if the VM’s external IP were allowlisted instead, the Cloud SQL instance would still retain a public endpoint, which does not satisfy the requirement to minimize public exposure. Since private IP connectivity is already available, relying on public IP plus allowlisting is less secure and less appropriate.
Correct. Because the Compute Engine VM and the Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance are already connected to the same custom VPC and region, private IP connectivity is the intended secure path between them. Removing the Cloud SQL public IP eliminates the internet-reachable endpoint and significantly reduces the attack surface while preserving application connectivity over internal RFC1918 addressing. This aligns directly with the stated security policy to minimize public exposure without breaking service communication. In production designs, private IP is the preferred option whenever database clients reside in the same VPC or in explicitly connected networks.
